First Year Freshman Students

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR FIRST YEAR FRESHMAN STUDENTS
 

I. Academic and eligibility criteria for First Year Freshman applicants:

  • Have at least three years of (state core) science courses
  • Have taken mathematics courses through pre-calculus (elementary functions), calculus preferred
  • Rank in top 25% of high school graduating class
  • Have a “B” average in your state core courses and a “B” average in your math/science courses
  • SAT math of at least 450 and verbal of at least 450, or TASP math, reading and writing component
       score >=250 each
  • Meet other admission requirements of Texas State University-San Marcos
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident


II. Applicant must be a declared major in the College of Science and Engineering in one of the
    following:

  • biochemistry
  • biology
  • chemistry
  • computer science
  • engineering
  • engineering technology
  • mathematics
  • physics

III. Verify that you are filling out the correct application:

If you have no college credit OR if you have 1-29 hours of transferable college credit, you are considered a first year freshman student and should complete the first year freshman application. If you have 30 hours or more of transferable college credit, you are considered a transfer student. Transfer students with 30+ hours should complete the application for transfer students.

IV. Recommendations/References:

You will be asked on the online application to provide the names and email addresses of three (3) high school math and science professors/teachers who can attest to your academic credentials or career goals. Reference requests will be emailed to these individuals via the email address you list on the application. They will fill out your reference online, so you do not have to ask them to mail us a reference letter. All references are due by application deadline.

If you are a new or first-year student and do not have math or science professors/teachers who know you well, you can list former professors/teachers, business professionals, or employment supervisors as your references.


V. Application Essay Question:

Prepare a one page essay and answer the following four questions:

1) What are your career goals and why are you interested in this career?
2) What have you done thus far to prepare yourself for this career?
3) Why do you need financial aid?
4) How will you contribute to diversity at Texas State University?

Type your essay into the text box on the application form and upload it as an attachment.

VI. Transcripts:

Send an Official High School Transcript to the address below by application deadline.


Final checklist for applicants:

  • Complete all information in the online application, including references and essay.
  • Once you electronically submit your application, you will be emailed a Declaration Form.
  • Sign and submit your Declaration Form and Official High School Transcript to the address below by the
       application deadline.
  • All applications documents (application, official transcript, signed declaration page, and three
       references) must be received in our office by application deadline.
